Why we should all go to therapy

Nothing I’m about to write should be news to anyone

I’ve been in therapy most of my life… which would be an amazing way to start this post.

But I’m lying.

This is what we do when we write, we tend to exaggerate. The truth is, I wish I had been in therapy most of my life.

I’m not new to therapy though. I’ve been going to psychoanalysts since I was a teenager. Both my parents went to therapy when they were younger, and they were supportive of my sister and me starting our own mental health journey. My dad’s 80 today and he’s also gone back to therapy. Truth is, it’s never too late to search for your better self.

I went on to see different people on and off throughout my life, and it helped me cope with different situations and understand fragments of my behavior and upbringing.

I recently went back into therapy after moving to the Netherlands in mid-2018. Yes, the COVID-19 pandemic had a heavy impact on my mental health — as it did on most people we know — but I realize I had been dealing with severe anxiety long before this, and I was avoiding addressing it. But why?
