The art of routine building

It’s like building a house: one brick at a time

I used to always say to myself that I was not good at routines. Routining is an art, and I was not a great artist. I envied my friends who were able to stick to a schedule. I would read so many stories about building a routine on Medium, and I would feel worse about myself.

So instead of trying to build something up, I would do what most people do when they have a “waking moment” in their lives; I went from 8 to 80 in one day.

I would join a new very-expensive-how-can-I-afford-this gym. I would throw away all of my snacks. I would buy salad and vegetables. I would give up soda. I would pay for a nutritionist consultation. I would put my alarm for 6h30. I would start talking about how great I was feeling about this change. I would make endless plans to start writing every day on my journal.

I would set myself up for failure.

Before you start a new routine, you need to remember that everything in your life is a moment. It’s all just an accumulation of fragments that constitute a whole.

Why?

Because if I start thinking today that I need to exercise every Monday for the rest of my life, it will begin to feel overwhelming. By taking it this way, you will not feel…
